IMPACT OF ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES ON OLIVE PRESSING INDUSTRY AN EMPIRICAL STUDY ON SIWA OASIS

Abstract

Siwa Oasis holds numerous economic enablers in olive pressing industry. Therefore, the study aimed to explore the impact of economic and environmental policies on this vital industry, in order to develop a set of recommendations that could contribute towards reorienting this industry in the right economic and environmental direction. The study employed a descriptive and analytical approach, employing the total sampling for Siwa oasis', in addition to a purposive of the areas surrounding the presses. In this study, the questionnaire was a main instrument for data collection, and the data was analyzed using SPSS analytical program. The study found that economic policies effectiveness degree in consolidating the olive pressing industry in Siwa oasis on a five-point Likert scale, as well as, It also demonstrated acceptable levels of environmental standards implementation (environmental quality standards, pollutant emission limits standards, process and production standards, and product standards) in Siwa oasis' olive presses. The hypothesis testing resulted in acceptance the first alternative hypothesis, which states that economic policies have a significant impact on the profitability of olive mills. As for the second hypothesis, it is found that alternative hypothesis was partially accepted, showing that only (process and production standards, and product standards) have a significant impact on the profitability of presses. The study concluded with a number of recommendations that revolve around the need to redirect economic and environmental policies to promote the olive pressing industry and enhance its contribution to economic development.
