Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the level of awareness within local administrations regarding the principles of environmental governance and their role in solid waste management. It also sought to assess the impact of current environmental legislation and policies on the efficiency of solid waste management in Egypt. Furthermore, the study explored the role of transparency and accountability in improving local government performance in this area and identified the key challenges facing local administrations in implementing environmental governance in waste management. The researchers adopted the descriptive-analytical approach to examine the relationships among the study variables and their influence on the topic. The study reached several key findings, most notably the existence of a statistically significant positive correlation between environmental governance in local administration and the enhancement of sustainable solid waste management systems in Egypt. A statistically significant positive relationship was also found between environmental legislation and policies and the development of sustainable waste management. Similarly, a significant positive correlation was found between strategic waste management planning and the promotion of sustainable waste systems. The study recommended several actions, including: the development of environmental legislation specific to solid waste management; the establishment of specialized units for environmental governance within local administrations; strengthening partnerships between the public and private sectors; implementing electronic monitoring and control systems for waste management; and launching public awareness programs about environmental governance and waste management.
