Abstract

The current study aims to define the most important social variables related to the wastage of environmental resources among basic education students, identifying as well, the social factors that affect environmental resource wastage among basic education students in rural versus urban settings, and comparing the social variables associated with environmental resource wastage among preparatory stage students. The study also seeks to propose specific recommendations aimed at addressing the issue of environmental resource waste. A questionnaire is used with a personal interview to collect data, and descriptive statistics have been used to analyze the data. This study relied on the scientific social survey method through the purposive sample. The most important study results: The study showed a statistically significant relationship between certain social variables and environmental resource wastage, with energy wastage being higher in rural areas compared to urban areas. This indicates the role of social factors in this context. There was also a statistical relationship between the variable of age and some forms of environmental pollution, but no statistically significant relationship was found in other cases such as noise and air pollution. No statistically significant relationship was found between the number of siblings and some forms of environmental pollution, except in some rural cases. Theoretically, a relationship was confirmed between prevalent values, customs and traditions in society and environmental resource wastage, highlighting the importance of environmental awareness and education in reducing wastage. Scientifically, these results can guide environmental policies towards enhancing environmental education and awareness and encouraging sustainable consumption practices. Awareness and training programs that contribute to changing behaviors towards sustainable resource use can be developed. Key Recommendations: Increase environmental awareness levels among school students through awareness and educational programs. Research centers should play a role in providing solutions and recommendations to preserve the environment and solve its problems. It is also important to encourage companies to adopt social and environmental responsibility initiatives and to encourage the use of clean environmental technologies.
