DEVELOPING A SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM FOR THE SECOND YEAR OF MIDDLE SCHOOL IN LIGHT OF THE DIMENSIONS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN ORDER TO DEVELOP SOME ENVIRONMENTAL SKILLS AND VALUES

Abstract

The current research aimed to develop the social studies curriculum for the second grade of middle school in the light of the dimensions of sustainable development, and to know the extent of the impact of the developed curriculum on the development of skills and environmental values, the research has relied on the experimental approach, and the descriptive approach, where the research group consisted of Sixty pupils divided into Thirty experimental group, and Thirty  control group, the researcher has  built some materials and tools Such as building a sustainable development dimension list, an environmental skills list, a list of environmental values, a test for environmental  skills, a measure of environmental values and a handbook for the developed curriculum.
The results of theresearch found that :  the superiority of the students of the experimental group from the control group in the results of the environmental skills test and the scale of environmental values, and the results indicated that there are statistically significant differences between the averages of the experimental and control group scores in the post-test of the total degree of environmental skills test in favor of the experimental group, and the scale of environmental values in favor of the experimental group, which indicates the effectiveness of the developed curriculum in teaching the social studies curriculum in the light of the dimensions of  Sustainable development to develop environmental skills and values.
The research recommended the need to take advantage of the developed curriculum that has been applied and recommend its application in the social studies curriculum for the second grade of middle school when designing the new curriculum, and focus on linking environmental concepts included in textbooks with behavioral and life situations, when taught, to ensure that students acquire environmental skills and environmental values and apply them effectively, and the work of training courses to qualify teachers and educational mentors on how to apply environmental skills and values within the educational curricula in a way that leads to changing the behavior of students and instilling Values of taking ethical responsibility towards the environment and its problems.
