THE REALITY AND PROBLEMS OF THE NEW RESIDENTIAL AREAS: AL-ASMARAT NEIGHBORHOOD AS A MODEL

Abstract

The current study aimed to reveal the reality and problems of the new residential areas that were established to transfer slum dwellers from the unsafe areas in which they were living. It also aimed to explore the characteristics and the conditions of the residents therein, determine whether the state plans took into consideration the different population dimensions when people moved to the new society, and describe the mechanisms and ways of adaptation of slum dwellers in the new community.
The researchers used a number of tools, such as a questionnaire, in addition to the ecological approach, which is based on studying the interaction between the physical, social, economic, and psychological dimensions and their role in maintaining social balance and impact on the social structure of the community.
The main results of the study were the presence of several positive aspects, including the adaptation of the respondents to the natural environment and their satisfaction with the availability of services that they were missing in their old areas of residence, such as sanitation and gas. The advantages also included the safety in which they live, away from bullies and thieves, and the availability of means of transportation and communication.
The results also indicated that the respondents were dissatisfied with some negative aspects, foremost of which are the exorbitant monthly rents and the remoteness of workplaces, which has led to an increase in the economic burden on the family, in addition to the poor quality of the furniture. The results of the study also showed the lack of teachers in schools and the absence of a public hospital.
Study Recommendations: The Slum Development Fund and the New Urban Communities Authority should take into consideration all the dimensions of the resettled population by developing plans stemming from their needs in order to face some of the problems they suffer from, in addition to activating the role of popular participation in solving problems.
