ENVIRONMENTAL CITIZENSHIP FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN TERMS OF THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC LEVEL A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN STUDENTS OF A THEORETICAL FACULTY AND A PRACTICAL ONE

Abstract

The current study drives at achieving environmental citizenship among university students, identifying as well the difference aspects between students of theoretical faculties and practical faculties, the means through which environmental citizenship can be achieved, the most important environmental rights and duties, defining as well their role in determining environmental responsibility. For fulfilling this research, preview studies involved in this topic are reviewed and a scale of environmental citizenship is designed to be administered on a sample of university students. This scale is consistent of five basic dimensions of environmental citizenship crystallized in the following: the attitude towards (the environment - environmental citizenship – personal responsibility – environmental participation – environmental justice).  This research results indicate differences exists between responses of the theoretical colleges and the practical ones. It is noticed despite the mild difference that female scientific faculties’ students are more aware of the dimensions of environmental citizenship, environmental participation and environmental justice. Regarding the socio-economic level, the more elevated is the socio-economic level, the more is the awareness of environmental citizenship dimensions.
The citizenship scale is designed and accomplished in its final form after checking its validity and reliability, consisting of fives axes that discuss several concepts as follows: the concept of the environment (12 items) -   concept of environmental citizenship (12 items) – concept of personal responsibility (12 items) – concept of environmental participation(12 items)  – concept of environmental justice(12 items).
Scale of environmental Citizenship is applied on a group of (25) male/ (25) female students from a theoretical faculty and on a similar sample consisting of (25) male/ (25) female students from a practical faculty. The socio-economic level of students is also examined in light of dimensions of environmental citizenship.
Finally, the results have resulted in: There are differences between the responses of students of theoretical colleges and the responses of students of scientific colleges where we note that students of scientific colleges are more aware of the exclusion of environmental citizenship despite minor differences as well as more aware of the concept of environmental citizenship for students of theoretical colleges as well as more aware of personal responsibility of the theoretical colleges and more aware of environmental participation And towards environmental justice and also with regard to the level of social economic and environmental citizenship where the greater socio-economic level social awareness of the increase of environmental citizenship, where the sample saw a study on the level of social or otherwise In the light of the environmental dimensions of citizenship.
