SOME VARIABLES OF SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT AND THEIR RELATION TO SELF CONCEPT IN HANDICAPPED CHILDREN (A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN MALES AND FEMALES)

Abstract

The study aims to identify some variables of social environment and its relation to the self-concept in handicapped children. The sample of the study consisted of 60 handicapped children. There were many conditions in selecting the research sample, including considering the classification of children to males and females, and the children are form different social, economic and cultural environments, different residential levels of educations, and the age of handicapped children between 9–12 years. The sample selected from the files of handicapped children from the outpatient clinic of the faculty of physical therapy, Cairo University. The researcher used the guide to assess the social, economic and cultural situation of the families of handicapped children and the measure of the self-concept of the disabled child. The scale was applied to 6 cases (3 males and 3 females) of the patients randomly exit from this step with complete reassurance of the good formulation of the terms of the scale and then applied to the same sample again, the period of time elapsed between the first application and the second application was one weeks and the correlation coefficient was calculated twice application was then carried out on the sample as a whole after knowing the stability and accuracy of the meter. The results of the study reached the following: 1- There are statistically significant differences between the mentally disabled children of both sexes (males and females) in the self-concept. 2 - There are differences of statistical significance in the self - concept of children with mobility - related socio - economic level. 3- There are differences of statistical significance in the concept of self in children with mobility, according to the variable environment (rural-urban).
