THE IMPACT OF APPLYING TOTAL QUALITY IN UNIVERSITY EDUCATION ON ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT-AN APPLIED STUDY ON THE BUSINESS STUDIES SECTOR

Abstract

The progress of universities is measured by the amount they provide to serve their societies. The progress of peoples is measured by the extent of success of their educational institutions to achieve sustainable development and the overall renaissance in various fields and sectors. Therefore, the interest in developing higher education institutions and studying of ways to achieve their developmental role is of importance. The aim of the current research is to achieving total quality management in university education to achieving sustainable development and in order to achieve this goal, we have reviewed previous studies and research related to the current study’s subject. The research has adopted the quasi-experimental method for conducting an exploratory study to determine the current status of total quality management for the study sample, and to prepare a questionnaire for total quality management in education and sustainable development. For checking validity and reliability of this research, the study is applied on a sample of (300) students as the experimental group, selected from Faculty of Commerce, Ain Shams University. The study comes to a number of results, the most important of which are: There is a significant statistically significant effect of the total quality standards in university education on achieving sustainable development. From this major result, the following minor results are derived: There is a statistically significant effect of total quality standards on the environmental dimension. There is a statistically significant effect of the total quality standards on the social dimension and there is a statistically significant effect of the total quality standards on the economic dimension.
The most important recommendations of this research are as follows: The total quality standards and sustainable development should be incorporated into the curricula of universities to produce a conscious generation of the importance of total quality management. Also, the efforts of the state agencies should collaborate and activate the monitoring role and follow-up on universities and ensuring their commitment. Setting a comprehensive strategy that includes owners of industrial establishments to be subjected to environmental training and occupational safety and put it within the licensing requirements to ensure the preparation of an environmentally friendly facility. Finally, the media campaigns should raise awareness about total quality management and sustainable development within universities.
