GENETIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES ON AUTISM
Polymorphisms of genes encoding enzymes involved in float metabolism have long been hypothesized to be maternal risk factors for autism. In addition to genetic background, the exposure to mercury whether organic or inorganic can give rise to the symptoms of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) such as impairments in social interaction, communication difficulties and repetitive behaviors and interests.
Our objective was to investigate the association between metallothionein (MT) gene polymorphism and levels of mercury in the hair of Egyptian autistic children. Thirty-one autistic children diagnosed by DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition criteria) were subjected to hair mercury measurement using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and were compared to polymorphism of genes MT1A and MT1E matched healthy children.
The present study revealed that there was a highly significant increase in the mean hair mercury level in autistic patients than controls (0.79±0.56) ppm vs. (0.13±0.08) P<0.001 associated with polymorphism in MT1A (AG genotype). There was high significant difference in MT1E (GG genotype) between males and females (P<0.001) while in control were non significant. The results of this study highly support the increase in the mean hair mercury level in autistic children compared to controls.

IMPROVEMENT OF SWELLING SOIL USING CEMENT DUST
The present work aims to study the utilizing of some industrial solid waste materials to improve the behavior of the problematic soils such as swelling soil and soft clay. The soil under study is taken from two regions; Sahl-Al Tinah in north Sinai and Toshka in southeastern of western desert. We have tried to use constant ratio of CKD equal to 20% mixed with small ratios of cement (6%, 9%, and 12%) with different percentages of soft clay and swelling soil. In this regard important techniques (XRD, SEM) were carried out to identify the mineralogy and microstructure changes before and after treatment. Geotechnical tests (e.g. Atterberg’s limits, Compaction, Unconfined compressive strength (qu) and free swelling) were measured. The results showed that the dry density increases as the swelling soil ratios decrease and the soft clay ratios increase from (1.65 to1.74 gm/cm3), the optimum moisture content (2o.19%). Unconfined compressive strength were increases as the swelling soil decrease and the soft clay increase from (30 to156.3) kN/m2 at 90 days curing time and 6% cement, and it increases from (89.9 to 257.6) kN/m2 at 90 days curing time and 9% cement, and increase from (215.9 to 389.8) kN/m2 at 90 days curing time and 12% cement. The values of plasticity properties slightly decrease with gradually increase of soft clay percent and gradually decrease of swelling clay percent in all mixtures, free swelling decreased from (50% to 20%). XRD and SEM analyses after treatment showed that all clay minerals are transformed to new cementitous compounds, such as (C-A-H, C-S-H, and C-A-S-H), which has a more complex crystalline structure, as curing time increase.

SCREENING OF EGYPTIAN PATEINTS SUFFERING FROM INBORN AMINO ACID METABOLIC DISORDERS
Diagnosis of aminoacidopathies constitutes a challenge in a developing country with high positive consanguinity rate and no newborn screening programs. The number of diagnosed inborn errors of amino acid metabolism is growing constantly due to the availability of recent analytical technique as tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). This study highlights the importance of clinical awareness among physicians in patients presenting with unexplained neurological signs and alarming features that are commonly associated with metabolic diseases.
Our scope is an assessment of overall prevalence rate of amino acid inborn errors metabolism in Genetics Research Unit, Pediatric Hospital, Ain shams University. Results indicate that 851 patients with phenylketonuria (PKU), 109 patients with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), 15 patients with nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), 14 patients with tyrosinemia, 4 patients with homocystinuria, 4 patients with citruillinimia and 3 patients with arginimia. It is clear that high consanguinity rate among families in different types of diseases that 1st cousin consanguinity is the highest rate among patients.
